A thoughful revisiting of a place haunted by Hemingway

Jeff Day has written a first-person account of his visit to an empty and strangely altered landscape that was the basis for some of Hemingway's most compelling early fiction. As immediate as the published stories are, Day's book delivers the fine focus of journalism, putting the reader in the moment, on that very spot. Well worth a careful reading. You feel as though you'd just jumped off a boxcar with your clunky canvas gear and were about to have an adventure worth retelling.

Revisiting Hemingway Haunts

Part memoir, part history, part assortment of anecdotes, Jeff Day's "In Search of Hemingway's Meadow" is a compelling collection of essays. Reflecting on his experiences while camping and fishing along the Fox River, (probably Hemingway's actual "Two-Hearted" river in Michigan's UP), the author interweaves threads from the life of Hemingway with his personal observations. He puts a face on past and present Seney, Michigan ("One street wide and one street long, Seney had twenty-one saloons"). He describes his confrontation with a bear ("Two heads diverged in a yellow wood, each at the top of the food chain"). He explains the finer points of fly fishing ("It is alchemy--hoping to turn the coats of dead animals into the brown, red, gold, and silver of trout"). Always, he mesmerizes with precise prose ("Aluminum pots . . . cleaned to within an inch of blinding in cream of tartar)." You'll like this book if you love history or fishing or nature. Or if you love life.

Great book

I've been a fan of Hemingway's Big Two-hearted River since I was a kid. I've gone so far, as did this author, to emulate the trip (as much as possible in southern Illinois!). I found the depictions and descriptions of the equipment and its use to be fascinating and right on point, and the history of the town and area lends a lot of depth to my understanding of the Hemingway classic.
